“The Director of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tells Japanese Companies: ‘Do Business with Confidence.'”

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported that Liu Jinsong, Director-General of the Asian Affairs Department at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who had previously pressured Japan with a domineering stance by putting his hands in his pockets during the China-Japan director-general level talks, visited Japanese companies in China and conveyed the message that “it would be good to conduct business activities in China with peace of mind.”

According to the report, Director Liu made these comments on the 18th while inspecting the bases of Japanese companies in Dalian, Liaoning Province, right after meeting with Masaki Kanai, Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau at Japan’s Foreign Ministry, in Beijing.

Nikkei reported that Director Liu was briefed by company officials on the status of their business activities in China and created a friendly atmosphere by hugging them at the end of the inspection.

It was also analyzed that “China seems to hope that, at this point, political conflicts between China and Japan do not spread to production and sales activities within China.”
