The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which preserves and exhibits the essence of the American film industry, is holding a long-term exhibition highlighting the creative filmmaking process of Director Bong Joon-ho.

Opened in 2021 by the Academy Foundation, which hosts the Academy (Oscars) Awards, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles is the largest film museum in the U.S. It exhibits a variety of film-related legacies and screens selected notable films.

According to the museum, the exhibition titled “Director’s Inspiration: Bong Joon-ho” will run from March 23, next month, to January 10, 2027.

The “Director’s Inspiration” series involves the museum selecting one film director and intensively spotlighting their cinematic world in the exhibition.

This exhibition focuses on Director Bong Joon-ho’s creative filmmaking process, his past works, and their impact on the film industry, the museum stated.

The exhibition will feature over 100 original items, including previously unreleased archive materials from Director Bong, personal collections, storyboards, research materials used in filming, movie posters, concept art, models, props, and photos from the film sets.

The museum remarked, “Whether set in 1980s Korea or an imagined future, Bong Joon-ho’s films address transnational and universal issues such as class disparity, social injustice, environmental crises, and political and moral corruption.”

They further explained Bong’s cinematic world by saying, “From his early short films to the globally successful ‘The Host’ and Oscar-winning ‘Parasite,’ his works refuse simple categorization, merging societal critique with highly entertaining, unexpected, and thought-provoking narratives.”

Though the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has previously held retrospectives screening the works of Korean actors Song Kang-ho and Youn Yuh-jung, this is their first long-term exhibition focused on the film world of a Korean director.

Director Bong’s film “Parasite” won four awards, including Best Picture, at the 2020 Academy Awards.

The museum mentioned that this exhibition is sponsored by CJ ENM, Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange (KF), and Netflix.
