“Space Tourism” Event Without Special Mission? Reasons for Criticism [Social Pick]

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin launched a spacecraft carrying only women into space. However, it was also criticized as a “tourism product for billionaires.”

“1, 2, 3, Let’s conquer space!”

A spacecraft carrying six women, including pop star Katy Perry and Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez, illuminated the blue Earth. Floating hair and bright stars confirmed the zero-gravity environment of space.

The group took the New Shepard, which launched from Texas, USA, to the Kármán line at an altitude of 100 km, experiencing a 10-minute spaceflight.

Pop star Katy Perry revealed that she performed the song “What A Wonderful World” in space. This was the first all-female spaceflight since 1963, but reactions were not all positive.

The event was criticized as a “space tourist” activity without space experts or special missions. The New York Times published a column stating that while women can now enjoy capitalism’s most luxurious spoils, it remarked that space has become the most extravagant influencer platform.
