The three countries of South Korea, the United States, and Japan have decided to advance plans to establish a secretariat to institutionalize trilateral cooperation.
During a meeting of the foreign ministers of the three countries hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Kurt Campbell at his farm in Virginia, it was announced that a secretariat or similar coordinating body will be formed to build on the positive progress in the trilateral relationship.
Moreover, it was mentioned that in a meeting the previous day with Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu, concerns regarding North Korea’s provocations were raised, and a request was made for China to intervene to urge North Korea to refrain from provocations.
Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun pointed out that North Korea continues to violate United Nations Security Council resolutions, citing the recent launch of a military reconnaissance satellite on the 27th as a recent example of such provocative behavior.
Additionally, the trilateral cooperation of South Korea, the United States, and Japan announced joint sanctions against North Korea and Russia for their arms and oil trade, emphasizing that they will work with the international community to address illegal cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
Secretary Campbell also expressed some concerns about weapons trade between North Korea and Russia despite China maintaining close ties with North Korea, and stated that China is cautious of such trade between North Korea and Russia.
Regarding sanctions against North Korea, a focus has been placed on Chinese companies that systematically support Russia, with careful attention also being paid by financial institutions.
