Russia celebrates the third victory day after invading Ukraine… Putin: “Will not allow any threats.”

On May 9th, the Russian military held a parade on Red Square in Moscow to commemorate the 79th anniversary of Victory Day in World War II. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia will not allow any threats to its sovereignty. Various commemorative events were held across Russia on this day. President Putin emphasized that Russia’s armed forces are always prepared for combat and stated that Russia will take all measures to prevent global conflicts.

The parade featured over 9,000 military personnel, showcasing 61 different types of weapons and military equipment including tanks, armored vehicles, missiles, and aircraft. Leaders from various countries attended the event, but those from countries critical of Russia’s actions, such as the US and Europe, were not invited. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sent a congratulatory message to President Putin, affirming continued solidarity between North Korea and Russia.

In the lead-up to Victory Day, Russia launched concentrated airstrikes on power and transmission facilities in several regions. The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting and downing a significant number of Russian missiles and drones. The Russian military claimed to have seized control of key villages near the frontlines as part of their intensified offensive. Russia has been bolstering its offensive on the eastern front ahead of Victory Day.

The historical Victory Day commemorates the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945, celebrated on May 9th by Russia due to time zone differences. Ukraine changed its observance of Victory Day to May 8th following Russia’s invasion in 2022.
