Prime Minister Kani declares victory in Canadian general election: “The honeymoon with the U.S. is over”

Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, declared that the ruling Liberal Party he belongs to won the general election held on the 28th local time.

In his victory speech, Prime Minister Carney claimed, “President Trump is trying to bring us down to own us,” and stated, “The relationship based on steadily expanding integration with the United States is over.”

Local media report that while the Liberal Party succeeded in maintaining a majority over the Conservative Party, it is not expected to secure the majority threshold of 172 seats.

The Liberal Party was trailing the Conservative Party by about 20 percentage points earlier this year due to dissatisfaction with high prices and rising housing costs. However, they gained momentum leading to victory, spurred by factors such as the trade war with the US and President Trump’s remarks about incorporating Canada as the 51st state.
