China’s equivalent of a national parliament, the National People’s Congress (NPC), has revoked the representative status of nine Chinese military generals. According to Xinhua News Agency, this decision was made during the 21st meeting of the NPC Standing Committee, which concluded on the 26th, in compliance with laws that define the rights, duties, and responsibilities of representatives.
Prior actions regarding Zhang Youxia, the second-in-command and Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, and Liu Zhenli, the Chief of Staff, who were previously purged, have not been announced.
The nine generals whose status was revoked include: Li Wei, Political Commissar of the Strategic Support Force; Li Qiaoming, Army Commander; Shen Jinlong, Navy Commander; Qin Shengxiang, Navy Political Commissar; Yu Zhongfu, Air Force Political Commissar, who all hold the rank of General. Additionally, Wang Donghai, Political Commissar of the National Defense Mobilization Department under the Central Military Commission, Lieutenant General Bian Ruifeng, Ding Laifu of the Army, and Major General Yang Guang of the Rocket Force were also dismissed.
Following the personnel review by the NPC Standing Committee, it has been declared that the actual number of representatives now stands at 2,878. Alongside the nine generals, the qualifications of a total of 19 representatives, including civilians, have been revoked.
The NPC is comprised of approximately 3,000 members elected through indirect elections from 35 electoral units, including the 31 provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions, as well as military and armed police, and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau. The term is five years.
