New York City, Virginia, and New Jersey elections swept by Democrats… A check on Trump

On November 4th, local time, the Democratic Party swept the governor races in Virginia and New Jersey, as well as the mayoral election in New York, which were seen as key indicators of public sentiment towards President Donald Trump’s administration. This suggests a check on the unilateral governance style of the Trump administration.

In New York, the nation’s largest city and a symbolic heart of capitalism, Zohran Mamdani, a progressive icon and a New York State Assembly member, was elected as mayor, becoming the first Muslim to do so.

As the vote counting continues, the Associated Press reported that Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former U.S. Representative, won the Virginia governor’s race, defeating Republican Winsome Sears, the incumbent lieutenant governor.

With the current governor being a Republican, the Democratic Party has reclaimed the governor’s seat in Virginia for the first time.

Abigail Spanberger’s victory marks the first time a woman has been elected governor in Virginia.

In the New Jersey governor’s race, Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a U.S. Representative, defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a former New Jersey assemblyman who had the backing of President Trump.

New Jersey has been a Democratic stronghold, consistently voting Democrat in presidential elections since 1992.

Political circles and media in the U.S. closely watched the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial elections as they were expected to reflect public opinion on President Trump’s administration.

Especially with the midterm elections in November next year, which will elect members of Congress, potentially having a decisive impact on the latter part of Trump’s second term, media outlets anticipate that the Democratic Party will be encouraged by their victories in these gubernatorial elections.
