Musk’s Neuralink Begins Clinical Trials for ‘Brain Chip Implantation’

Neuralink, Elon Musk’s neuroscience startup, announced on the 31st local time that it will begin clinical trials to implant brain-computer interface (BCI) chips in the UK, following the United States.

On this day, Neuralink posted on its X (formerly Twitter) account about starting clinical research in the UK in collaboration with institutions like the University College London Hospitals.

Neuralink emphasized that the start of this research in the UK is based on successful clinical trials in the United States and marks an important step in providing life-changing BCI technology to people suffering from neurological disorders worldwide.

They further stated that if you are experiencing paralysis due to conditions such as spinal cord injury or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), you might be eligible to participate in this study and provided a website for patient registration.

Bloomberg News, citing an announcement from University College London Hospitals, reported that this clinical trial would evaluate the safety and functionality of BCI devices on up to seven patients with neurological disorders.

Neuralink has been developing BCI chips with the goal of enabling people with paralysis due to accidents or illnesses to control various devices through thoughts via devices implanted in their brains.

The company is also conducting clinical trials in Canada and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) besides the US and the UK.

Bloomberg noted that at least nine people have received Neuralink’s chip implantation surgery so far.
