In southern India, a massive landslide occurred due to heavy monsoon rains, resulting in at least 31 deaths and dozens missing, as reported by local media and AP news on the 30th local time.
The landslide hit villages on the hills near the town of Meppadi in the Wayanad district of Kerala. At least 31 people, including children, have died, dozens are missing, and around 70 have been injured. The death toll is expected to rise further.
Local media reported that hundreds of residents have been isolated due to the landslide. Rescue teams are at the scene conducting search operations, but they are facing difficulties due to ongoing rain and unstable ground conditions.
The meteorological authorities had issued a high alert in Kerala as heavy rains continued. Local authorities have also ordered school closures in some areas.
In India, most of the annual rainfall occurs during the monsoon season from June to September. However, in recent years, the monsoon season has been lasting longer and becoming more intense than usual. Experts attribute this to climate change and global warming, noting an increase in extreme weather events.
