Ishiba: “Spoke with Trump… Agreed to meet early.”

[

Ishiba Shigeru revealed this morning that he had a phone conversation lasting about five minutes with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Meeting with reporters at the official residence today, Prime Minister Ishiba mentioned that he and President-elect Trump shared the intention to meet soon and elevate the U.S.-Japan alliance to a higher level and stage.

He added that the conversation ended with mutual expectations of achieving positive outcomes together.

Prime Minister Ishiba, noting that it was his first one-on-one conversation with President-elect Trump, said he felt a very friendly vibe, describing Trump as someone who does not embellish his words and leaves the impression of a person who can express his true thoughts.

In response to questions about the meeting schedule with President-elect Trump, he stated that arrangements are currently being made and expressed anticipation for their discussion, which he also considers important.

Regarding the revision of the U.S.-Japan Status of Forces Agreement, which he has advocated since before assuming office, Ishiba said that topic was not brought up during today’s call.

He emphasized that moving forward, strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance will be vigorously discussed from various perspectives, including financial aspects, equipment, operation, and integration.
