A vehicle attending a wedding in India fell into a river, resulting in the death of three people. Google expressed “deep condolences… and is working closely with authorities to investigate.” According to the Hindustan Times and other sources, on the 24th of this month, a vehicle in the northern Indian region of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, plunged into the Ramganga River from a bridge under construction.
The vehicle was carrying three passengers who were on their way to attend a wedding. Local police reported that the driver was following directions from Google Maps and entered the bridge under construction, unaware that it was incomplete, and subsequently fell approximately 15 meters.
The bridge had been under repair due to partial damage caused by a large flood last year. However, it was reported that there were no proper signs or barricades at the bridge entrance to indicate ongoing construction at the time of the accident.
Police have arrested construction personnel and a representative from Google Maps. In response to the incident, Google stated, “We express our deepest condolences to the bereaved families” and are “cooperating closely with authorities to investigate this issue.”
