Ebola Spreads in Congo and Uganda: 204 Deaths Amidst Vaccine Shortage

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), an Ebola outbreak is rapidly spreading, with 867 suspected cases and 204 reported deaths. This outbreak is considered one of the most extensive in recent years. According to the Indian Times on the 23rd, the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the risk level in the area to “very high,” and some regions are experiencing medical system overloads.

The outbreak is associated with a variant that the existing vaccines are not fully effective against, increasing the difficulty of controlling the situation. Slowing the spread has become a critical task, given the limited availability of treatments and vaccines.

Uganda has closed its main border with the DRC to prevent further spread. There are concerns about the infection crossing borders, increasing tension in neighboring countries. Although health authorities are intensifying efforts on contact tracing, isolation, and monitoring, there are concerns that disputes and inadequate medical infrastructure are hampering the response system.

Experts note that, unlike previous Ebola responses, this outbreak involves both a vaccine gap and variant characteristics, making it difficult to contain without swift international support.
