Participation Limited in Secondary Schools and Universities
Federal Funding Cut if Violated
—
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to prohibit transgender women who transitioned from male to female from participating in women’s sports.
On the 14th (local time), the U.S. House approved the ‘Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act,’ with 218 votes in favor and 206 against.
This bill restricts the participation of transgender women in school and college educational programs or athletic activities funded by the federal government. It stipulates that, in athletic competitions, gender should be determined based on biological sex and genetics at birth. Schools receiving federal financial aid will lose funding if they violate this law.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, commented after the vote, “This is fair and makes sense.”
The participation of transgender women in women’s sports is a contentious issue between conservatives and liberals in the U.S., often described as a ‘hot potato.’ Conservative groups and politicians opposing sex reassignment argue that participation should be limited to protect biological women. President-elect Donald Trump also expressed a similar opinion during the presidential campaign.
