“BJ를 보겠다고”… 군중 몰려 39명 압사, 수십 명 부상

[Herald Economy = Reporter Kim Sung-hoon] In India, a massive crowd gathered during an election campaign of a prominent politician, resulting in at least 39 people being trampled to death and over 50 injured.

According to Reuters on the 28th (local time), a large number of supporters gathered at an election event in Karur, Tamil Nadu, southern India, held by Vijay, a popular actor-turned-politician, leading to many people being crushed.

According to state authorities, 39 people, including 13 men, 17 women, 4 boys, and 5 girls, have died so far. Additionally, 51 people, comprised of 26 men and 25 women, are receiving intensive care.

It is reported that the tragedy occurred as the crowd surged toward the stage barricade to see Vijay. When people started fainting as the crowd pressed toward the vehicles, Vijay tried to throw water bottles to the people, but the situation could not be controlled. Eventually, Vijay requested help from the police.

Vijay is considered one of the most popular actors in the Tamil-language film industry in southern India for the last 30 years. Last year, he founded a regional political party and has been serving as its leader, campaigning ahead of local elections early next year. Being a superstar, Vijay even drew massive crowds in his first rally after founding the party last October, which resulted in six deaths. Despite police measures such as venue changes and limiting the scale of the motorcade, the efforts were insufficient.

Vijay expressed his condolences to the victims, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “My heart is breaking. I am enveloped in unbearable and indescribable pain and sorrow.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also posted on X, expressing deep sorrow over the unfortunate incident that occurred during the political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, and wished strength to the families who lost their loved ones during this difficult time.

The state of Stalin announced that it would provide compensation of 1 million rupees (approximately 15.9 million won) per victim to the bereaved families.
