Apple is expected to equip the new version of ‘Siri’ with ChatGPT.

Next month, the next-generation AI voice assistant will be unveiled, reflecting a sense of crisis that ‘AI competition is falling behind’. It is expected that Apple may incorporate ChatGPT into the next-generation version of the artificial intelligence (AI) voice assistant ‘Siri’ to be unveiled next month. It is interpreted as Apple’s attempt to catch up late in AI technology development, as it has been lagging behind. According to The New York Times on the 10th (local time), Apple will unveil the new Siri at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) starting on the 10th of next month. NYT reported, “The new Siri is expected to include a conversational generative AI system, rather than the traditional way of responding to one question at a time,” and stated, “Rather than directly competing with ChatGPT, the focus was on improving tasks like setting timers, scheduling calendars, summarizing texts, and other tasks that Siri already performs.” Siri, introduced by Apple in 2011, is a voice assistant that handles basic tasks such as making calls and sending text messages based on the user’s voice requests. Combining generative AI technology with this could further upgrade the service through conversations with users. Bloomberg also reported on the 11th that Apple and OpenAI are in the final stages of discussions to incorporate ChatGPT into the upcoming iPhone operating system, iOS 18. This is why there are speculations that ChatGPT could be applied to the next-generation version of Siri to be announced next month. The background behind Apple unveiling the new Siri next month is known to be an internal sense of crisis that ‘falling behind in the AI competition’. An Apple official told NYT, “Apple’s executives are concerned that new AI technology could potentially replace iOS on the iPhone, threatening Apple’s dominance in the global smartphone market.” NYT also analyzed that Apple’s decision to abandon its autonomous car development business earlier this year and reallocate hundreds of engineers to the AI development division was due to this reason.
