This year’s popular reading keywords are inner self, mindfulness, and independence… More people are reading at 9 PM.

This year, the main reading keywords have emerged as ‘Inner Self’, ‘Mindfulness’, and ‘Independence’. According to the ‘Reading Trend Report 2024’ published by the reading platform Millie’s Library, based on reader data from January to October, ‘Inner Self’ was selected as the key reading trend in the novel category. Millie’s Library analyzed popular books and the Top 200 list in various categories using ChatGPT, identifying six core keywords. The platform explained that novels dealing with inner pain and growth, such as ‘A Little Life 1’ and ‘The Proof of the Nine’, resonated deeply with readers.

In the poetry and essay category, ‘Mindfulness’ was identified as the keyword, with works focusing on everyday healing gaining popularity. In the economics and business category, ‘Independence’ was a significant theme, reflecting readers’ high interest in financial independence.

Reading patterns also showed changes from the previous year. Unlike last year, when reading was more common in the morning, this year saw more people reading between 9 and 10 PM. There was a notable increase in reading activity in January and on Mondays, times associated with fresh starts.

The rise of audiobooks was another distinct trend this year. Aligned with the trend of time efficiency, demand for audiobooks surged across all age groups, with usage being highest among those in their 40s at 38%. The most loved audiobooks were the novels ‘Small Things Like These’ and ‘The Break Room’.

Monthly popular book rankings clearly reflected seasonality and social issues. Early in the year, ‘Schopenhauer at Forty’ was popular as it aligned with New Year resolutions, and in spring, ‘Who Needs a Flower Path, My Life is the Flower’ resonated with female readers.

Since launching its subscription service in 2017 with 23,000 members, Millie’s Library has shown steady growth, reaching 8.35 million members as of October this year. Most users are in their 20s to 30s, with female members making up 59% and male members 41%.
