“South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Act is Not a Trade Barrier” – Personal Information Protection Commission to Meet with U.S. FTC

Ko Hak-soo, the Chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission, will discuss data and privacy policies for the AI era with Melissa Holyoak, a commissioner of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), during a visit to the United States on the 22nd (local time). According to the Personal Information Protection Commission, Ko plans to share South Korea’s hosting plans for the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA) in September and explore cooperation between the two organizations.

Ko will also participate in a round-table event hosted by the Brookings Institution, where U.S. government officials, industry leaders, regulatory bodies from major countries, and civic groups will gather. Here, he will emphasize the need for AI data governance.

Regarding South Korea’s new data transfer policy, which was recently listed as a trade barrier in the U.S. Trade Representative’s (USTR) National Trade Estimate (NTE) report, Ko plans to offer an explanation. He will also provide information about initiatives such as the “pre-adequacy review” and the “one-stop innovation support center” to address legal uncertainties in the industry.

Chairperson Ko is visiting Washington, DC, to attend the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Global Privacy Summit. He will participate as a panelist alongside various officials including the U.S. Ambassador for international communications policy and heads of privacy agencies from France and the UK.

Additionally, Ko will have relay meetings with Chief Privacy Officers (CPOs) from major tech companies like Microsoft, Google, and Meta. He stated that in the midst of rapidly changing global circumstances, the commission aims to carefully formulate policies considering AI technology and global policy shifts, while continuing international cooperation and discussions so that principles of innovation and trust pursued by the commission are reflected in global AI data governance.
