SK Telecom announced on the 22nd that it won the ‘Climate Action Initiative of the Year’ award at the ‘Glotel Awards 2024’, which recognizes outstanding telecom companies worldwide.
The 12th Glotel Awards, held on the 21st in London, UK, are organized by the global ICT research institution ‘Informa’ and select innovative companies across 24 categories, including telecommunications services, infrastructure, AI, and marketing.
The ‘Climate Action Initiative of the Year’ award is given to manufacturers or telecom companies that have engaged in excellent eco-friendly activities such as energy saving through ESG technology.
SK Telecom was recognized for its contributions to sustainability with its ‘Infrastructure Power Manager (IPM)’ technology, achieving a remarkable feat by winning the Glotel Award for eight consecutive years.
IPM is a technology that automatically adjusts the power consumption of key components used in telecom data center servers in real-time according to customer traffic volume and trends.
In contrast to traditional telecom data center virtual servers, which are fixed in maximum performance mode regardless of traffic volume, resulting in maximum power and carbon consumption, IPM optimizes power consumption of components based on traffic volume without degrading quality and performance, reducing cumulative CPU power by up to 55% compared to conventional virtual servers.
With its IPM technology, SK Telecom has also received the ‘Sustainable Network Technology Award’ at the ‘World Communication Awards 2023’ and the ‘Network X Awards’ in October. SK Telecom continues to advance the IPM technology and expand its application areas.
Additionally, SK Telecom is recognized for its innovation with consecutive awards in various prestigious international awards for its diverse technology developments aimed at sustainability, including power-saving technology for devices, base stations, and servers.
In September, SK Telecom won the ‘Outstanding Use of AI’ category at the ‘Leading Lights Awards 2024’ for its on-device AI-based smartphone power reduction technology and also received the ‘Best Sustainable Network’ award at the ‘Network X Awards’ in October for its energy-saving technology. At the Network X Awards, SK Telecom was acknowledged for its technological excellence with its IPM technology and AI-based open RAN power-saving technology.
SK Telecom was evaluated as having significant recognition from major international awards for expanding its AI technology applications from terminals to base stations, enhancing the value of telecommunications networks, and practicing ESG.
