Ministry of Science and ICT explores measures to prevent youth smartphone and social media addiction

Ministry of Science and ICT. ⓒDailyanDB, ‘[Daily News = Reporter Kim So-hee] On the 14th, the Ministry of Science and ICT held a company meeting at the Seoul Smart Space Center to prevent ‘youth addiction to SNS and smartphones.’

On this day, domestic and foreign companies providing digital platforms and services attended the meeting. Each company introduced the policies they are autonomously driving to promote healthy SNS and smartphone usage for youths.

In addition, they shared trends in platform algorithm regulations introduced in major countries such as the United States and the European Union, and discussed policy directions reflecting recent digital content consumption trends like short-form videos.

Eom Yeol, Information and Communication Policy Officer at the Ministry of Science and ICT who chaired the meeting, stated, “Concerns about youth addiction to SNS and its side effects are increasing globally, including children and adolescents.” He emphasized the importance of the role and responsibility of companies in promoting a healthy digital culture along with government efforts such as specialized counseling and preventive education.

Based on the discussions at this meeting, the Ministry of Science and ICT will expand collaboration with digital companies to prevent and alleviate SNS and smartphone addiction.

They plan to establish a cross-ministerial digital inclusion plan with related ministries to minimize digital dysfunction and support the desirable growth of youths.’
