KT installs IoT-based automatic weather observation equipment in Wondong Wetland, Yangsan.

KT Collaborates with National Institute of Ecology and Yangsan City for Field-Focused Biodiversity Conservation Activities
KT has installed automatic weather observation equipment based on its communication technology in the Wondong Wetland, Yangsan City, Gyeongsangnam-do, in support of the National Institute of Ecology’s environmental research in celebration of World Wetlands Day.

The automatic weather observation equipment installed in Wondong Wetland is KT’s first application of its Internet of Things (IoT) communication technology to a wetland site, aimed at biodiversity conservation. In August last year, KT and the National Institute of Ecology signed a partnership agreement to conserve biodiversity, which is rapidly declining due to climate change.

Powered by renewable energy (solar), the automatic weather observation equipment is capable of remote, low-power communication, allowing for continuous monitoring and real-time data transmission of key weather elements such as temperature, rainfall, and humidity. The accumulated weather data will be utilized by the National Institute of Ecology for analyzing changes in wetland ecosystems and for research related to wetland biodiversity.

The installation of this automatic weather observation equipment in Wondong Wetland establishes a foundation for continuously monitoring weather and environmental information essential for ecological research. KT plans to gradually expand field-centered biodiversity conservation activities, including the removal of invasive species and improvement of habitats for protected species, in collaboration with the National Institute of Ecology and Yangsan City.

World Wetlands Day, observed on February 2, commemorates the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty on wetland conservation signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971. Established in 1997, this international day aims to raise awareness about the value and importance of wetlands.

Oh Tae-sung, Executive Vice President of KT’s ESG Management Promotion Office, stated, “KT will continue to expand its climate change response and biodiversity conservation activities by collaborating with professional institutions based on digital technology.”
