Jeongsin A, the CEO of Kakao, and Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, shook hands at a press conference held at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul on the morning of the 4th. Kakao and OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, announced a strategic partnership.
This marks the first time that OpenAI has formed a strategic alliance with a domestic company, with Kakao leading the way. CEO Jeong mentioned that discussions with OpenAI about various areas, including technology, services, and business, have been ongoing since September last year.
The two companies plan to focus on making AI services more accessible to a large number of users, driving technological cooperation for AI service advancement and developing joint products.
Jeongsin A stated, “Kakao aims to collaborate with top companies to secure the best AI (artificial intelligence) technology and turn all imaginable services in the AI era into reality.”
He added, “We are launching ChatGPT technology across a range of projects, including Kakao services, and I want to emphasize that this partnership is about developing joint products for Kakao’s 50 million users, beyond just utilizing the latest technology.”
Sam Altman praised Kakao’s deep understanding of how technology enriches daily life and their continued provision of innovative experiences to users.
He expressed his excitement, saying, “We are thrilled to offer advanced AI to Kakao’s extensive user base and integrate this technology into Kakao’s services to innovate the ways their users communicate and connect.”
Kakao plans to utilize both its own language model and OpenAI’s model in the development of the “Kanana” service. Additionally, Kakao aims to provide AI-supported services that aid in relationship building and strengthening by offering context-aware responses not only in one-on-one conversations but also in group chats.
