“Even if the video is cut, AI extends it”… Adobe releases ‘Generative Expansion’ tool

Adobe has officially launched a generative AI tool in the video editing software “Premiere Pro” that can automatically extend video clips. According to IT-focused media outlet The Verge, Adobe recently integrated a Firefly-based video-generating AI called “Generative Extend” into Premiere Pro. This tool allows AI to naturally extend existing videos by up to 2 seconds. It also enables the creation of 4K high-resolution videos with background audio generatable for up to 10 seconds.

Adobe initially previewed this tool as one of the first in video-generating AI late last year. The usage is straightforward—users just click a button in the Premiere Pro tool panel and drag the video they want to extend, and the end portion is automatically generated. Adobe explained that this would be particularly useful for situations where the camera starts too late or stops filming too early, allowing users to achieve smooth scene transitions or correct unexpected movements without additional reshoots.

Currently, the Generative Extend tool is being offered for free for a limited time, but it is planned to become a paid feature through Firefly credits, which are included with an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. Adobe has not specified how many credits will be needed, only stating that the price will vary based on the video’s format, frame rate, and resolution.

Additionally, the AI-driven search functionality in Premiere Pro has been enhanced. With the introduction of an AI search panel, users can easily find videos by searching text within their video library. For example, entering “close-up of hands working in the kitchen” into the search panel will prompt AI to automatically find the relevant video. The AI video recognition feature was noted for its potential to significantly reduce editors’ working time when it was beta-released in January.
