Lee Kwang-hyung, the civilian chairman of the National Intellectual Property Committee and president of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), delivered the opening address at an event focusing on “Intellectual Property Strategy in the Era of Global Technological Hegemony.” The event was held at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Seoul on the 25th.

The “2024 National Intellectual Property Network (KIPnet) IP Policy Conference,” hosted by the Presidential National Intellectual Property Committee, marked its 15th annual gathering. The conference theme was centered around assessing and sharing insights on global IP trends and Korea’s strategic policy direction in light of changing conditions.

KIPnet is a network involving government bodies, public institutions, industry associations, universities, and research institutions dedicated to proposing comprehensive intellectual property policies and facilitating exchange and cooperation among related organizations.

The conference featured opening remarks by Lee Kwang-hyung, followed by congratulatory remarks from Hwang Cheol-joo, president of the Korea Invention Promotion Association. The keynote address was delivered by Seo Yong-seok, director of the Institute of National Future Strategy Technology Policy at KAIST, discussing “National Strategic Technology and Intellectual Property.”

Subsequent KIPnet sector presentations included discussions on essential future policies, such as: adapting domestic industry responses to the impending enforced disclosure of genetic resource origins (New Knowledge Division); strengthening systems to deprive monetary gains from the leakage of national strategic technologies (Protection Division); IP-based digital platform business ecosystem innovation (Foundation Division); improvements to the Chief Patent Officer system in national R&D projects; standard/patent policy and institutional improvements in response to industrial digital transformation (Creation Division); and enhancing the technology trading platform to improve IP utilization outcomes for universities and research institutes (Utilization Division).

Lee Kwang-hyung emphasized the necessity to enhance national strategic technology IP utilization and strengthen national competitiveness amid anticipated intensification of protectionism and global technological hegemony. He pledged the committee’s commitment to mobilizing capacities of related institutions and transforming challenges into effective national policies through support and effort from the intellectual property committee.
