[Herald Economy = Reporter Park Se-jung] CJ OliveNetworks will establish Korea’s largest public virtual production studio (hereafter VP Studio) in Mungyeong City, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

On the 30th, CJ OliveNetworks announced that it had won the ‘Metaverse Digital Media Innovation Hub Construction Project’ ordered by the Gyeongbuk Culture Foundation Content Promotion Agency. The contract is valued at 12 billion KRW.

Mungyeong has gained attention as a popular filming location for historical Korean movies and dramas, growing as a major city for period drama filming. To respond to the digital transformation of the content production market, Mungyeong launched this project to build a VP Studio to create a comprehensive video production complex and lead innovations in the media industry.

The VP Studio is a studio composed of large LED displays on the background, ceiling, and floor of the set. Unlike traditional chroma key filming, it allows filming while directly viewing background videos on LED displays. It is praised for significantly enhancing actors’ satisfaction and reducing time and costs.

The Mungyeong VP Studio will be established within the Mungyeong Indoor Filming Studio, located on the unused site of the former SsangYong Cement Mungyeong Factory, covering an indoor area of 1,662㎡.

CJ OliveNetworks will optimize the studio space with approximately 50 million LED pixels to ensure successful VP Studio construction. The LED displays are specially designed in a J-shape to accommodate both straight and curved forms, allowing for a variety of genre and scene settings.

Straight displays can film set backgrounds or interiors, while curved displays enable distortion-free filming of open spaces like airplanes and spacecraft.

Furthermore, to provide an optimal filming environment, they plan to offer a total solution that includes an LED Wall, real-time 3D engine, along with production convenience facilities and security system.

CJ OliveNetworks has previously built content studios in various industries, such as group affiliates and KBS XR (Extended Reality) Studio, Amorepacific Digital Content Studio, and the Gwangju Immersive Content Cube immersive filming studio system. Over the past five years, they have completed over 250 internal and external broadcast media system integration (SI) and infrastructure projects. The company states that this contract was also highly evaluated based on past successful case studies and differentiated technological competitiveness.

Lee Joo-young, Head of CJ OliveNetworks’ DX Business Division 2, said, “The Mungyeong VP Studio, the largest public VP Studio, will become a hub leading innovation in the media industry through the integration of various technologies. We will actively leverage our IT know-how and technology in broadcasting media to successfully convert it into media content.”
