AI Phone Falls Short of Expectations… “AI Features Released So Far Aren’t Very Helpful”

A U.S. smartphone price comparison site conducted a survey with around 2,000 participants, revealing that most users are not satisfied with the artificial intelligence (AI) features available in currently released smartphones.

The IT media outlet 9to5Mac reported on the 16th (local time) a survey conducted by the American smartphone price comparison site SellCell. The survey targeted over 1,000 adults residing in the U.S. who are using AI-supported iPhone models (iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max) and over 1,000 using AI-supported Samsung Galaxy smartphones (Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Z Flip 4).

This survey was conducted before the release of iOS 18.2, which integrates Apple’s intelligence feature Zenmoji and ChatGPT. SellCell asked participants about their satisfaction with AI features in smartphones and how important AI is when purchasing a new product.

The survey found that most smartphone users are dissatisfied with current AI features. Specifically, 73% of iPhone AI users and 87% of Galaxy AI users reported that new AI features are not particularly valuable and do not enhance their smartphone experience.

For the most popular AI features, iPhone users highlighted the writing tool (72%), notification summary (54%), priority messages (44.5%), photo organization (29.1%), and smart replies in mail and message apps (20.9%). Samsung AI users identified circle search (82.1%), photo assistance features (55.5%), chat support (28.8%), memo support (17.4%), and search support (11.6%).

Additionally, the survey showed that iPhone users are relatively more interested in mobile AI compared to Samsung users. About 47.6% of iPhone users responded that AI features are ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ important when purchasing a new phone, while only 23.7% of Samsung phone users said the same.
