Due to gatherings and protests related to President Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment verdict, traffic is congested in the direction of Jongno on Yulgok-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the morning of the 2nd. As the impeachment verdict for President Yoon Suk-yeol approaches, the three major telecommunications companies and the two leading platform companies are actively working to prevent communication disruptions and service access errors.
According to industry sources on the 3rd, the three major telecommunications companies are enhancing network expansion, deploying mobile base stations, and strengthening monitoring, focusing on areas expected to see large crowds. On the 4th, when the impeachment verdict for President Yoon is announced, large pro and anti-impeachment gatherings are expected near the Constitutional Court, with 130,000 people reportedly participating according to police.
SK Telecom plans to monitor the gathering situation in real-time, optimize existing equipment in advance, and open additional lines. They will deploy mobile base stations to minimize inconvenience for customers. KT has completed inspections of communication networks in areas expected to be crowded and is setting up an emergency response system, including operating an emergency situation room. They will deploy mobile base stations based on on-site conditions. LG Uplus has installed mobile base stations, temporary repeaters, and generator equipment in regions like Gwanghwamun and near Anguk Station, where large gatherings took place from the end of last year, and is assigning resident personnel. They will monitor traffic and prepare for unusual situations.
Naver and Kakao are also on high alert ahead of the impeachment verdict on the 4th to prepare for any potential confusion. Kakao has established a response system for stable service operation, enhancing traffic fluctuation monitoring, expanding infrastructure like servers, and taking technical measures to prevent server downtime.
Portal Daum has launched an “Issue Focus” page to allow users to check major articles and special reports related to the impeachment and the sentencing process, anticipating a surge in users wanting to read the news. The page provides only articles related to the impeachment verdict and includes a “Impeachment Verdict Timeline” that summarizes the proceedings. It will also live stream the impeachment verdict announcement at the Constitutional Court at 11 am on the 4th.
Naver is also fully prepared, having increased personnel to monitor real-time traffic fluctuations on the day of the announcement and pre-checked related systems. A Naver representative mentioned that although the situation during the unexpected martial law on December 3rd caused a surge in traffic, functions like search and other apps worked normally except for cafes and news, and they will reinforce monitoring and real-time response for the impeachment announcement.
