The Democratic Party of Korea has announced plans to present and process the law for establishing a division dedicated to insurrection trials in the next week’s general assembly, irrespective of the Supreme Court’s announcements.

On the other hand, the People Power Party has opposed, arguing that constitutional and legal concerns have not been resolved, and demanded an immediate withdrawal of the bill.

This is a report by reporter Lee Yerin.

The insurrection trial division establishment law will be presented at the National Assembly’s plenary session on the 23rd.

The Democratic Party emphasized that a dedicated trial division is crucial for the complete end of the insurrection.

[Kim Byung-gi/Leader of the Democratic Party: “The more a trial is delayed, the more responsibilities become blurred and distortions increase. Time might favor the insurrection forces instead of justice.”]

The Democratic Party believes that concerns of unconstitutionality are alleviated since the dedicated trial division will be applied from the second trial and the recommendation rights of external figures like the Minister of Justice are removed.

Conversely, the People Power Party argues that amending the bill does not eliminate unconstitutional elements.

They described it as an “unconstitutional and illegal attempt to cater the trial division to the Democratic Party’s preferences,” and announced plans to counter with a filibuster during the plenary session.

[Shin Dong-wook/Highest Member of the People Power Party: “No matter how much you clean a rag, it’s still a rag. And a patchwork remains a patchwork. That means no matter how you change the packaging, the essence doesn’t change.”]

The law to eradicate false and manipulated information, promoted by the Democratic Party, passed through the Legislation and Judiciary Committee amidst absenteeism from People Power Party lawmakers.

The law allows for claims of damages up to five times the damage amount in cases of false information dissemination.

The Democratic Party assessed it as a law to prevent damages from fake news, but the People Power Party criticized it as a “law to suppress media criticism.”

The Democratic Party plans to present the law for eradicating false and manipulated information on the first day of the plenary session, on the 22nd, before the insurrection trial division establishment law.
