[Herald Economy = Han Sang-hyo] With the start of the National Assembly audit on the 13th, the Democratic Party declared, “We will strictly respond to the People’s Power Party’s attempts to disrupt the investigation that seeks to defend far-right stances, distort historical truths, provoke anti-China sentiments, and hinder the cleansing of internal strife. At the same time, we will strive to ensure that the parliamentary audit focuses on cleansing internal strife, restoring public livelihood, economic growth, and completing reforms.”
Chief Spokesperson Park Soo-hyun stated after the Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, “Starting today, we will dive into the national audit. I cannot understand the People’s Power Party’s assertion that seeks to investigate what they call the demise of the Lee Jae-myung government, which is making desperate efforts to normalize Korea, inaugurated without a transition committee due to illegal martial law and impeachment.”
Chief Spokesperson Park noted, “The livelihood bill, designated as a fast-track agenda item in April, is scheduled to be automatically referred to the Legislation and Judiciary Committee on the 14th. The Democratic Party will push for the plenary session proposal of this livelihood bill that the related industries have been eagerly awaiting.”
Regarding the potential for a plenary session this week, he said, “I understand negotiations are ongoing, and I hope the plenary session will convene swiftly this week.” He emphasized that “The People’s Power Party, having wasted six months with their opposition, needs to promptly cooperate for the plenary session so that the delayed livelihood bills can be processed immediately.”
Chief Spokesperson Park also mentioned the recent frequent employment scams and abductions faced by Koreans in Cambodia. He urged “the government to sustain attention and formulate measures regarding the Cambodian employment scam and abduction issues.” He referred to the “Amendment to the Consular Assistance for Overseas Koreans Act” proposed by Democratic Party lawmaker Park Chan-dae.
The amendment includes provisions that allow consuls to take immediate action upon confirmation of a missing person case, regardless of family reporting, regular inspections and ministerial reports on staffing and budget status at each consulate, and the realization of staffing and budget arrangements.
Furthermore, Chief Spokesperson Park disclosed that “the Democratic Party is also considering setting up a provisional ‘Special Committee on Overseas Employment Fraud’ to investigate and seek legislative measures.”
Lastly, Chief Spokesperson Park expressed concern over the news that “the People’s Power Party’s local election planning team is considering reflecting attendance at rallies in their nomination review.” He questioned whether they are inadvertently emulating far-right parties.
