Prime Minister Kim Min-seok stated today (the 13th), “I urge all ministries to explore measures to eradicate the harm caused by cults and heretical groups like the Unification Church and Shincheonji within their respective domains, along with conducting a thorough joint investigation.”
During the Cabinet meeting held at the Seoul Government Complex this morning, Prime Minister Kim remarked, “Cults and heretical groups are societal evils that must be eliminated.”
He emphasized, “The corruption and illegality from the collusion between religion and politics have been the manure for national chaos, and they have also contributed to the destruction of our national reputation by being involved in various crimes and illegal activities overseas. If left unchecked, this will become a severe national harm.”
Previously, President Lee Jae-myung instructed the prosecution and police to initiate investigations before the launch of a special prosecutor team on the ‘alleged collusion between religion and politics’ on December 30th. A joint investigation unit was subsequently formed on the 6th.
Yesterday (the 12th), President Lee also discussed the significant harm caused by cults and heretical religions during a luncheon with leaders of seven major religious orders, stating that the damages have been greatly exacerbated due to being left unchecked for too long. The religious leaders requested the dissolution of problematic groups, including the Unification Church and Shincheonji, due to the severe harm they inflict.
