President Lee Jae-myung: “Let’s do what we can, including incorporating the spirit of the May 18 Gwangju Uprising and the Bu-Ma Democratic Protests into the constitutional amendment.”

“President Lee Jae-myung expressed his intent to pursue constitutional amendments, stating, ‘It would be good if the government officially reviews and formulates a stance on this at the government level.’

On the morning of the 17th, during a cabinet meeting held at the Government Complex Sejong, President Lee remarked, ‘The government is not at a stage to lead the constitutional amendment, but we should do what we can.’

President Lee mentioned, ‘Didn’t National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik suggest we proceed with constitutional amendments on topics that are easy for the public to agree on? For example, inserting the spirit of May 18 into the preamble of the constitution, this is something the opposition has talked about every day. They’ve promised it, and every May 18, they went (to Gwangju) and made promises.’

He also stated, ‘Strengthening local autonomy, tightening the requirements for martial law, these are matters people agree with and the opposition is unlikely to oppose. The government should take an interest in these issues and make efforts to advance them.’

Additionally, he recalled, ‘I remember the opposition suggested including the spirit of May 18 in the constitution’s preamble along with the Bu-Ma Democratic Protests. It would be better to do it all at once if we are amending the constitution.'”
