“Plenary Session on the 12th”… Heading Straight into Legislative Battle Without a ‘Honeymoon’ Period

[Anchor’s Comment]
The Democratic Party plans to hold a plenary session on the 12th to address a revision to the Criminal Procedure Act, which would suspend ongoing criminal trials if a person is elected president.
Both ruling and opposition parties seem poised for a full-scale battle over contentious bills immediately following the launch of President Lee Jae-myung’s administration.
This is a report by Lee Gyo-wook.

It appears that the Democratic Party will hold a plenary session on the 12th to address the bill concerning the suspension of trials for President Lee Jae-myung.

They are considering handling revisions such as amending the Criminal Procedure Act to suspend criminal trials upon presidential election and removing actions from the requirements for false information declaration crimes under the Public Official Election Act.

A Democratic Party official emphasized that the presidential office’s intention is important, adding, “Our position on the necessity of passing the bill is clear,” and “The priority is the revision of the Criminal Procedure Act.”

This seems to take into account that the retrial of President Lee Jae-myung’s public official election law violation charge is scheduled for the 18th.

The Innovation Party of the Homeland also backed the necessity of passing the bill.

▶ Interview: Kim Sun-min / Acting Leader of the Innovation Party of the Homeland
– “If the president is constantly entangled in trials or investigations either before taking office or while in office, the administration of state affairs will become paralyzed.”

The People Power Party has labeled this as a “shield law” for President Lee Jae-myung and insists that trials should continue.

▶ Interview: Joo Jin-woo / Legal Advisory Committee Chairman of People Power Party (on the 5th)
– “The dates for President Lee Jae-myung’s trials have not been canceled. The fact that the court is not canceling these dates implies they believe the trials should continue even if he becomes president.”

▶ Standing: Lee Gyo-wook / Reporter
– “However, even if the People Power Party attempts a filibuster, the ruling coalition has enough seats to force an end to it, leaving the minority opposition party, the People Power Party, without a clear strategy to counter the ruling party.”
