People Power Party Approves Amendment to Party Constitution and Regulations Banning Presidential Intervention in Nominations and Appointments at Emergency Committee Meeting

On the 27th, the People Power Party resolved an amendment to their party constitution and regulations at an emergency committee meeting, which fully prohibits the president’s involvement in party affairs, including nominations and appointments. This action follows presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo’s promise to establish systematic measures to fundamentally block the president’s intervention in party affairs.

On this day, at a meeting held at the National Assembly in Seoul, the party agreed to a new “separation of party and president” provision that bans presidential interference in key party matters such as nominations and appointments. Additionally, they approved a new provision against factionalism, which prohibits actions that undermine intraparty democracy, autonomy, and fair competition, even if led by the president or a particular faction.

Emergency committee chairman Kim Yong-tae explained their amendments’ motive, underlining their commitment to reforming the relationship between the party, the government, and the president. A few days earlier, candidate Kim Moon-soo had highlighted issues during former President Yoon Seok-yeol’s term and announced plans to formalize principles of party-government cooperation, separation of party and president, and banning factionalism in party rules.

The amendment passed by the emergency committee will be finalized after decisions made by the Standing National Committee on the 28th and the National Committee on the 31st.

In addition, the People Power Party announced the formation of a special committee to investigate alleged corruption involving Governor Lee Jae-myung and the Gobukseom project. The committee is chaired by Representative Kim Eun-hye and includes members such as Gwak Kyu-taek, Joo Jin-woo, Cho Ji-yeon, Park Jun-tae, Park Chung-kwon, and regional party chairs Jeong Pil-jae and Kim Yoon-sik, making up a total of eight appointees.
