The ongoing dispute between Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo and Myung Tae-kyun has stirred various claims and legal threats. Hong Joon-pyo announced plans to file a defamation lawsuit against Myung Tae-kyun. On the other side, Myung’s representatives claim to possess evidence that Hong attempted to rejoin the People Power Party (PPP) through Myung.
Myung’s lawyer, Nam Sang-kwon, stated at the Changwon District Prosecutor’s Office that they have “concrete evidence” of Hong’s attempt to use Myung for his readmission to the party. Nam claims that in April 2021, Hong called Myung asking him to appeal to then PPP Emergency Committee Chairman Kim Jong-in regarding his reinstatement. Myung purportedly met Kim at a private residence in Jeju and advocated for Hong’s return to the party.
Nam further warned Hong that if they were sued for defamation, they would respond with accusations of false reporting and advised caution in Hong’s statements.
Previously, Hong mentioned on his social media that his reinstatement was due to unanimous support at the party convention following Kim Jong-in’s departure, and he intended to charge Myung with circulating false information.
Meanwhile, prosecutors have obtained the so-called “golden phone” used by Myung for four years and are analyzing its contents for evidence related to potential nomination interference.
