“Minister of the Interior and Safety Criticizes Opposition Party, Calling Them ‘Unilateral’… ‘Even Slashing the Minimum Budget of 100 Million Won for the Police Bureau'”

Minister of the Interior and Safety, Lee Sang-min, expressed significant concern regarding the upcoming year’s budget plan, particularly criticizing the reduction of basic operational costs for the police department, which amounted to approximately 100 million won. He stated, “The entire amount was cut for reasons that are difficult to comprehend,” and emphasized his dissatisfaction with the unilateral budget handling by the opposition party.

During a government joint briefing at the Seoul Government Complex, Minister Lee criticized the opposition’s independent budget reduction proposals, highlighting that “the basic expenses for the police department, covering essential items such as office supplies, travel expenses for government officials, and meal allowances for extra-hours work, are fundamental for the operation of the organization.” He argued that the complete removal of these operational funds, although small in amount, cannot be justified by reasonable grounds and undermines the essential functions of the state.

Minister Lee also raised concerns about the cut in the police agency’s budget, particularly noting that it may hinder efforts to combat major issues such as drug-related crimes, digital sexual offenses, and cyber gambling. He warned that these budget reductions could impair the police’s ability to address public security effectively and safeguard citizens.

He concluded by urging for a budget based on bipartisan agreement to be passed through the National Assembly, expressing a hope to restore confidence among the public.
