Lee Jae-myung: “Please change the party in the owner’s seat after 20,000 people leave the party.”

Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, is working to address the aftermath of the internal struggles following the party’s nomination for the parliamentary speaker position, promising party members democratic principles.

Today (23rd), Lee Jae-myung wrote a letter to long-time comrades who have decided to leave, expressing his deep concern over their decision. He mentioned the problem of the number of people leaving the party, especially long-time loyal members who have weathered many storms with the party.

Lee particularly emphasized the need to regain trust, stating that it is possible only when the party truly implements a ‘party-centered democratic party.’ He urged party members not to give up and leave, but to pick up the scepter as the owners of the party and transform themselves into tools for democracy.

He promised to open up deliberations on ways to expand and strengthen the roles and responsibilities of party members in party operations, internal elections, candidate selections, and policy-making processes, as well as the establishment of a member council.

Addressing concerns that strengthening party members’ authority might increase the grip of radical supporters on the party, Lee stated that regaining trust in representing the will of the sovereign would eliminate the need for radical actions.
