Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced on the 16th at a Supreme Council meeting in the National Assembly that he would step down as the village head of ‘Jaemyung Village’, stating, “Given the extraordinary circumstances, I am resolved to focus more on my duties.” Jaemyung Village is Lee’s fan club.
On the same day, Lee posted on this cafe, saying, “Just like those of you who gather at the square in threes and fives after work, I, too, have a lot to take care of these days.” He added, “I will return. I can’t promise when, but I love you.”
He explained that stepping down was in line with focusing on his duties, saying, “In fact, being village head didn’t mean I exercised any authority.” He added, “Even if I’m not the head, I still consider myself a resident of Jaemyung Village. As always, feel free to leave both compliments and criticisms. I’ll listen and always be with you as a resident.”
Addressing his supporters, Lee said, “I firmly hold in my heart your spring-like love that lifted me up after the presidential election defeat, so don’t worry.” He continued, “Though I can’t greet each of you personally due to my busy schedule, I am well aware of how all of you in Jaemyung Village are at the forefront of protecting democracy with unmatched action. Thank you.”
Lee had previously rejected demands from non-Lee supporters to resign from his fan cafe head position. His announcement to focus on his duties amid President Yoon Seok-youl’s impeachment situation is seen as part of his presidential ambitions. It’s a declaration that he intends to extend his political reach beyond his fandom to the general public.
