Lee Jae-myung: “Constitutional amendment for a four-year presidential term should be after the presidential election”… Opposes simultaneous voting.

Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, expressed his opposition to the proposal of a four-year presidential term with the possibility of re-election, stating that it could lead to significant debate without achieving results and might become a cause of national division. He mentioned this at the party’s highest committee meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, on the morning of April 7, 2025.

Lee pointed out that topics like the four-year presidential term, transferring the Audit and Inspection Board to the National Assembly, the runoff voting system, strengthening local autonomy, and enhancing citizens’ basic rights are subject to extensive debate. He suggested that such complex issues should be promised by presidential candidates to the public and implemented as quickly as possible after the election. He concluded by emphasizing that while constitutional amendment is important, preventing the destruction of democracy is far more critical at the moment.
