On the 21st, ahead of the ‘Seoul AI Summit’, a joint editorial was published by President Yoon Suk-yeol and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, outlining three principles of AI governance to realize the potential of artificial intelligence innovation, safety, and inclusivity.
President Yoon and Prime Minister Sunak stated in a joint editorial published in the British daily i-Newspaper and Korean newspaper JoongAng Ilbo on the 20th that “both countries are jointly working to use the potential of AI technology to make the world a better place.”
Regarding the upcoming ‘Seoul AI Summit’, they mentioned that this summit follows on from the dialogue that started at Blenheim Palace in the UK last November and stated that they will present three principles of AI governance to fully realize the potential of AI this time.
The first principle they emphasized was ‘innovation’, highlighting that the governments of both countries have nurtured the spark of innovation by investing in computing infrastructure and providing comprehensive support to startups.
They then focused on the second principle of ‘safety’, acknowledging that AI can bring threats, including intentional misuse. They emphasized the importance of continued research on how to best manage these threats and called for efforts from both countries and businesses to uphold safety standards.
Lastly, they underscored the importance of ‘inclusivity,’ stating that efforts should be made to ensure that everyone benefits from AI technology and promoting diverse partnerships to address global issues like poverty and climate change.
In summary, President Yoon and Prime Minister Sunak expressed the need to swiftly move towards an AI era grounded in values of safety, innovation, and inclusivity, with the hope that the values will become established global principles of AI governance through the summit, forming a common understanding and unity in the first step towards global AI governance.
