Jung Sung-ho: “Han Dong-hoon did a good job with the Lone Star lawsuit… a decision that will be recognized as a principled evaluation.”

Justice Minister Jeong Seong-ho held an emergency briefing on the 18th at the Government Complex Seoul in Jongno-gu regarding the results of the cancellation application for the Lone Star ISDS. He announced on the 20th that the government’s victory in the Lone Star lawsuit was possible due to the steadfast decision of former Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon.

Minister Jeong remarked on his Facebook that morning that the victory in the Lone Star lawsuit was a national event. However, he noted that there was controversy over people taking undue credit (“spoon controversy”) and various discussions regarding past cancellation applications.

He explained that during the past cancellation application for arbitration, some argued that the likelihood of winning was very low based on previous cases, questioning why significant expenses were incurred. Nevertheless, then-Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon decided to proceed with the cancellation, believing in the small chance of success, which he commended as a good decision.

Minister Jeong particularly emphasized that Han’s decision was a commendable choice backed by conviction, pointing out that the cancellation lawsuit moved forward substantially after Han left the Ministry of Justice. The oral pleadings occurred during a time of national conflict, and it concluded when Lee Jae-myung’s government took office. The implication is that Han’s decision laid the groundwork for the government’s victory, and it should be duly recognized.

He also expressed gratitude for the dedication of Ministry of Justice employees and government attorneys who steadfastly contributed to the victory during a politically tumultuous period. He concluded by remarking that all involved should be grateful and celebrate as the nation’s fortunes are on the rise again.
