Jang Dong-hyuk: “The spirit of May 18 is a great pillar supporting the Republic of Korea.”

The leader of the People Power Party, Jang Dong-hyuk, emphasized his sincere commitment to stand with Honam so that the “May Spirit” becomes a source of pride for South Korea and a point of historical pride.

Ahead of his visit to Gwangju today (6th), Jang revealed his plans to pay tribute at the May 18th National Cemetery during a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly, stating he would bow his head before the spirits of those who perished for democracy in May.

He further explained that the establishment of the May 18th National Cemetery and the enactment of the May 18th Special Act were achieved through the great decision of President Kim Young-sam during the period of the New Korea Party, the predecessor of the People Power Party. He noted that the party’s platform explicitly states the simultaneous inheritance of the May 18th spirit and the spirit of industrialization.

Moreover, he expressed his conviction that these two spirits are the two great pillars supporting South Korea and promised to dedicate himself wholeheartedly so that they can become a new milestone towards genuine harmony and national unity.
