President Lee Jae-myung expressed his disbelief at the fact that the remains of some victims of the December 29 Jeju Air passenger plane disaster were discovered only after 1 year and 2 months had passed since the accident. He instructed for the situation to be monitored closely, stating that it was “incomprehensible as a matter of common sense.”
During a cabinet meeting on the 17th, the President remarked, “It seems that the bereaved families are becoming increasingly agitated as additional remains were retrieved due to inadequate retrieval efforts during the initial response to the 12.29 plane disaster.”
He further criticized, saying, “In a situation where many people are suffering, it doesn’t make sense that the remains weren’t properly retrieved and were instead stored in makeshift bags resembling trash bags.”
Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Kim Yoon-duk responded, “We are in consultations with several departments and are thoroughly investigating the matter of responsibility.”
The President then questioned the lengthy investigation process, saying, “Isn’t the investigation taking too long?” and although he acknowledged the difficulties of the investigation, he urged for it to be expedited.
He emphasized, “Your pens hold the power to create storms like a ‘witch with a banana fan,’ highlighting that this could be a matter of life and death.”
