(Seoul=Yonhap News) Kim Young-shin, Ahn Jeong-hoon – The Democratic Party of Korea is anxiously watching the Constitutional Court’s impending ruling on President Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment, repeatedly urging for the impeachment to be upheld.

Party leader Lee Jae-myung and other party leaders are holding a closed top committee meeting at the National Assembly to discuss countermeasures following the impeachment ruling.

The party leadership is expected to watch the live broadcast of the Constitutional Court’s ruling, which will begin at 11 a.m.

After getting a haircut at the National Assembly in the morning, Lee told reporters that it was a “grave situation,” adding, “We will wait with the people for the Constitutional Court’s prudent and wise judgment.”

Lee is expected to express his stance directly after the announcement of the impeachment ruling.

Spokesman Han Min-soo said on MBC Radio, “It will undoubtedly be upheld. All the issues raised are unconstitutional. If dismissed, how could any future president being a minority in a parliament stop (using military force against the National Assembly)?”

Park Beom-gye, a member of the National Assembly’s impeachment prosecution team, said on SBS Radio, “There may be a 7 to 1 dismissal ruling aimed at an 8 to 0 consensus, and it could eventually reach 8 to 0. The dismissal of the impeachment is an unthinkable assumption.”

Lee Geon-tae, the party’s legal representative, stated on YTN Radio, “I am confident of an 8 to 0 affirmation. The reasons for impeachment are clear from the evidence, and the entire nation witnessed the (martial law). The Constitutional Court justices will not deny it, and legally it is evident.”

Messages wishing for the normalization of the state through President Yoon’s removal have been posted on Facebook.

Jeong Seong-ho, a key ally, wrote, “The Democratic Republic of Korea, built by the blood and sweat of the people, is in crisis due to Yoon Suk-yeol’s insurrection. However, I believe in the great people’s strong resilience and our democracy. I trust the Constitutional Court justices.”

Vice Chairman Jeon Hyun-hee stated, “The Republic of Korea is a democratic republic where the people are sovereign. It is the command of the sovereign to judge the unjust power trampling on its people with the power delegated by the people. I believe the Constitutional Court will fulfill its duty to protect the democratic republic.”

Chief Secretary to the Party Leader Lee Hae-sik remarked, “Today should be a day we pledge never to repeat a constitutional disaster. It is the path to Korea’s recovery. I believe the Constitutional Court will follow the will of the people.”

The Democratic Party plans to convene a general assembly of lawmakers after the announcement of President Yoon’s impeachment ruling to discuss future political strategies, including the impeachment of Acting President and Prime Minister Han Deok-soo and Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok.

A party official said in a phone call, “The impeachment resolution against Deputy Prime Minister Choi has already been reported to the plenary session, and there is a strong opinion that a vote on impeachment should be held today because unconstitutional and illegal acts cannot be overlooked. The decisions will be made through leadership meetings and the general assembly.”
