Defense Acquisition Program Administration Prepares ‘Agile’ Guidelines for Software-Centric Weapon Systems

[Seoul Economy] The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced on the 5th that it has established guidelines for the introduction and operation of ‘Agile’ development, a software-centric weapon system.

Agile is a development method that involves developing and deploying software in short cycles and incorporating user feedback for improvement. It is widely used by the U.S. Department of Defense and information and communication companies.

The main points of the new guidelines include the direct participation of end users such as operational units and the Joint Chiefs of Staff from the early stages of development, flexible testing and evaluation, and the establishment of an environment for continuous updates.

DAPA plans to apply the Agile method to AI pilot technology mounted on unmanned systems for complex manned-unmanned combat systems and aims to identify related tasks within this year’s rapid demonstration projects.

DAPA explained, “While the existing approach focused on hardware-centric weapon systems developed over long periods, the increase in advanced weapon systems such as AI, unmanned, and robotic systems has necessitated the Agile approach.”
