Choi Jae-hae criticizes the opposition’s push for impeachment, calling it a “political impeachment that undermines the foundation of the constitutional order.”

Choi Jae-hae, the chairman of the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI), expressed his regret over the Democratic Party’s move to impeach him, stating that he sees it as a politically motivated impeachment that undermines the constitutional order. He made these comments on the 29th while attending a meeting of the National Assembly’s Special Committee on Budget and Accounts. Choi emphasized that audits were conducted in accordance with the law and principles.

Regarding allegations of a lackluster audit over the President’s residence relocation, Choi countered by saying that the findings were faithfully included in the audit report, and they conducted investigations to the best of their ability but could not establish any connections.

In response to perjury allegations, one of the reasons cited for impeachment, Choi asserted that he believes he provided honest answers during the National Assembly audit and does not deem his statements as false. He noted that since the public witnessed the audit proceedings on TV, it is up to them to judge. He maintained that he cannot accept the perjury accusations.

Regarding the non-submission of the audit committee meeting minutes, Choi explained that as the highest decision-making body of the BAI, the committee needs to ensure an environment where members can engage in free discussions, which requires confidentiality.

Choi expressed his hope that the impeachment motion would not pass and mentioned that if it were to pass, they would need to establish a response plan at that time. He also stated that he has no intention of resigning voluntarily.
