Diplomatic and Defense 2+2 Meeting Attendance, Joint Statement to be Adopted
Separate Bilateral Meetings with U.S. and Canadian Foreign Ministers…Meetings with U.S. Academia, “[Seoul=Newsis] Reporter Byeon Hae-jeong – Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul is set to depart on the 30th for ‘Diplomatic and Defense (2+2) Ministerial Meetings’ with the United States and Canada.”
“Minister Cho will leave from Incheon in the morning and will attend the ‘6th South Korea-U.S. 2+2 Ministerial Meeting’ scheduled to take place on the 31st (local time) in Washington D.C.”
“The South Korea-U.S. 2+2 Ministerial Meeting is being held three years after the 5th meeting took place in South Korea in 2021.”
“Minister Cho, along with Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will discuss responses to the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia, which is the most pressing issue. They will also conduct in-depth and comprehensive discussions on the South Korea-U.S. alliance collaboration and regional issues.”
“Both sides plan to adopt a joint statement reflecting the meeting outcomes and hold a press conference.”
“Minister Cho will also hold a bilateral meeting with Secretary Blinken to discuss ways to coordinate on the South Korea-U.S. alliance, South Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation, and North Korean issues.”
“He will meet with U.S. government and academic figures to request unwavering support and cooperation for the development of the South Korea-U.S. alliance.”
“Subsequently, on the 1st (local time) of the next month, Minister Cho will attend the ‘1st South Korea-Canada 2+2 Ministerial Meeting’ in Ottawa with Minister Kim, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, and Defense Minister Bill Blair.”
“This marks South Korea’s third 2+2 Ministerial Meeting partnership after the U.S. and Australia.”
“Similar to the South Korea-U.S. 2+2 Ministerial Meeting, they will discuss North Korea’s troop deployment to Russia, Korean Peninsula issues, and defense, security, and defense industry cooperation between the two countries, as well as major regional and global issues. Both parties will adopt a joint statement containing the meeting’s achievements and hold a press conference.”
“Minister Cho will also have a bilateral meeting with Minister Joly.”
“This meeting comes three months after they last met in a bilateral meeting in Seoul in July, and they will discuss ways to enhance practical cooperation between the two countries based on the ‘South Korea-Canada Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan’ adopted at that time. They will also exchange views on Korean Peninsula issues and global strategic cooperation.”
