Acting President Choi: “We must respect and accept the Constitutional Court’s decision… I expect mature citizenship.”

Choi Sang-mok, Acting President and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance, emphasized the importance of “mature civic consciousness” during a security-related ministerial meeting ahead of the Constitutional Court’s ruling on President Yoon Seok-yeol’s impeachment. He urged all citizens to express their opinions legally and to respect and accept the outcome of any decision, which he said is essential for social stability and community development.

Choi presided over the meeting at the government complex in Seoul, stating, “The international community is paying close attention to South Korea. Our country’s democratic resilience is being tested.” Concerns are mounting over potential illegal and violent protests or physical clashes as the impeachment ruling approaches.

The police have strengthened security around the Constitutional Court area in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and installed barbed wire. On the day of the ruling, they plan to designate a 100-meter radius around the court as a restricted zone for gatherings, which will be surrounded by barricades.

Acting President Choi noted the growing national concern over maintaining public order amid heightened tension between pro and anti-impeachment groups. He stated that while the government respects the freedom of assembly and protest, it is committed to ensuring public safety and maintaining social order through established principles.

He further warned against illegal or violent actions, stating the government’s firm commitment to addressing such acts according to the law and principle, specifically mentioning the non-tolerance policy for attacks on public authority, such as facility destruction, arson, or assault on police officers.

Additionally, he announced that central Seoul would be designated as a “Special Crime Prevention Reinforcement Zone,” and all available police forces would be mobilized to ensure stable public safety. This includes securing the safety of critical national institutions such as the Constitutional Court, parliament, and the judiciary to prevent any damage to the constitutional order.

Choi also called on relevant agencies, including the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Seoul city government, to recognize public safety as the top priority and thoroughly prepare in advance to prevent any unfortunate incidents or safety accidents.
