“In a scenario where there are speculations about an early presidential election due to the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol, Park Jie-won, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party, hinted at the possibility of running for the presidency.
Park stated, ‘Although it’s unlikely, if Lee Jae-myung is unable to run for any reason, Kim Dong-yeon could be a strong candidate, but I am also considering running myself.’
He also mentioned, ‘This early election will be a tight race between conservative and progressive camps, with an expected result of 50% to 49%.’ He emphasized the significance of the Honam region at this crucial time, recalling the impact of a large-scale demonstration in response to a conservative rally by the citizens of Gwangju, calling it inspirational and deeply moving.
Park further noted that the significance of an article from Foreign Policy, an American diplomatic magazine, which suggested that Lee could be a good partner with former U.S. President Trump, is considerable. He added that a prestigious American figure, whom he did not name, acknowledged Lee’s diplomatic capabilities with the U.S.
Regarding potential candidates for the Democratic Party, Park commented that while former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum, former Governor Kim Kyung-soo of South Gyeongsang Province, former Minister Kim Du-kwan, and Governor Kim Dong-yeon are remarkable figures, their chances are realistically low. Additionally, he clearly stated that former Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon is not being considered.”
