The National Heritage Administration Announces Intention to Designate ‘Hangul Calligraphy’ as National Intangible Heritage

The Cultural Heritage Administration announced today (26th) that it plans to designate ‘Korean Calligraphy’ as a new category of National Intangible Heritage.

‘Korean Calligraphy’ encompasses ‘the act of writing with ink and brush using Hangul, our unique script, and the traditional knowledge it embodies.’

Since the creation of Hunminjeongeum, Korean calligraphy has continued into the modern era, representing not only the unique script system of Hangul but also showing the distinctiveness and tradition of Korean culture through its styles and techniques.

The Cultural Heritage Administration explained that it designated Korean Calligraphy as a National Intangible Heritage due to several factors: ▲ the long history from the time of Hangul’s creation to the present ▲ its contribution to research in folklore, Korean language history, and food history through various written records ▲ its unique writing techniques and refinement ▲ its expansion into various art fields contributing to cultural diversity and creativity.

However, considering that Korean calligraphy is enjoyed by the entire nation, it will be designated as a community category without recognizing any specific holder or group.

After a 30-day designation notice period, the Cultural Heritage Administration will make a final decision on the designation following a review by the Intangible Heritage Committee.
