The Ministry of the Interior and Safety to Inspect Response Measures for Heavy Rainfall of ‘Up to 120mm’ in Yeongdong, Gangwon Starting Tomorrow

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 12th that they held an inspection meeting with relevant agencies in anticipation of heavy rain expected on the 13th and 14th, focusing on the Yeongdong region of Gangwon.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the Yeongdong region of Gangwon is expected to receive 10 to 20 mm of rain per hour, totaling more than 120 mm starting on the morning of the 13th. Additionally, wind speeds around 55 km/h (15 m/s) are projected along the East Coast.

As for the metropolitan area, Gyeonggi Southern Province is forecast to receive 20 to 70 mm, Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Northern Province 10 to 50 mm, and the five West Sea Islands 5 to 20 mm of rain. Gangwon’s Yeongdong region is expected to see 50 to 100 mm, with some areas experiencing over 120 mm.

In the Chungcheong region, Daejeon, Sejong, Chungnam, and Chungbuk are projected to receive 20 to 70 mm, Jeolla region with Jeonbuk 20 to 70 mm, Gwangju, and Jeonnam 10 to 50 mm, and Gyeongsang region with Daegu, Gyeongbuk, Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam, and the Ulleungdo, Dokdo areas expected to see 20 to 60 mm of rain. There is also a possibility of over 80 mm in the northern coast of Gyeongbuk and the northeastern mountains. Jeju Island is expected to receive 5 to 40 mm of rain.

Kim Kwang-yong, head of the Safety and Disaster Management Headquarters at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, requested relevant agencies to thoroughly prepare for the heavy rain, particularly focusing on the safety management of tourists in mountainous and coastal areas in Gangwon and Gyeonggi, where heavy rain is forecasted.
